Thermoplastic Vulcanizates: Considerations for Choosing the Best Material Grade

If you interested in acquiring high-performance elastomers such as Santoprene TPVs, you should evaluate the different material grades on the market before selection. In general, these thermoplastic vulcanizates are favourable for numerous manufacturing processes because they have the combined properties of vulcanised rubber and thermoplastics.

The latter constituent lends ease of processing and exceptional manufacturing flexibility while the rubber provides product durability, excellent strength and great sealing properties. However, you should note that the specific advantages of using TPV Santoprene will depend on your chosen grade. Here are some critical considerations to help you select the best option.

UV Resistance

When choosing a TPV material for your manufacturing work, you should consider the UV stability of different grades. UV resistance is an important property if you are planning on fabricating an item which is designed for outdoor use. If rubberised materials without resistance to ultraviolet radiation are exposed to sunlight consistently, degradation will occur, necessitating replacement. Therefore, you should look for grades listed for UV resistance with your dealer. If your product is intended for indoor use, you can choose alternative materials.

Flame Retardant

You should look for flame retardant materials for your TPV fabrication project if the products will be exposed to extreme heat. This precaution is also important if there will be fire hazards in the environment of use. If your manufactured product has this property, it will not combust, and if a fire breaks out in the presence of the specific material, it can slow down the spread of flames. This characteristic is not necessary for all applications. So, you should discuss your concerns with your materials supplier.

Colourability

The colour of your TPV product might be an important concern for you or your business. For instance, some companies will prefer to fabricate items of a certain colour to stand out from their competitors or promote brand popularity by using corporate colours. In addition, aesthetics are influenced by colours; choosing certain hues can make the manufactured item more appealing. If you are interested in specific colours in your TPV product, you should look for a grade with excellent colourability. Most general-purpose grades have this advantage.

Bonding

Finally, if you are interested in creating an elastomer product bonded to another material, you should consider your chosen TPV grade is compatible for your bonding applications. Some grades are capable of bonding with common thermoplastics such as ABS and polypropylene. If you would like these types of specialty moulding grades, you should discuss the specific bond material before making your purchase decision.
